PS3 Move Vs. Xbox 360 Kinect

Playstation 3 Move Vs. Xbox 360 Kinect

It has taken both Sony and Microsoft 4 years to produce a product worth competing against the Wii in the motion controller projects. Let's see which one is worth your money this Christmas.

Xbox 360
The Xbox 360 was launched on 2nd December, 2005. It is the successor of the Xbox and the second console designed and created by Microsoft. Since it's release, it has become a powerful contender in the gaming industry. The idea that set the Xbox apart from other consoles is the online community. Microsoft designed dedicated servers (meaning they built networks specifically for online gaming without having to rely on third party servers) which allowed users to play online multiplayer without any connection interruptions.

Kinect
The new motion sense controller, Kinect, allows users to control the character on the video game by simply moving their body.

The hardware itself is big to say the least, measuring in just under a foot long and 7 inches tall. Installing the hardware onto the Xbox is easy enough, if you have the new model that is. If you have one of the older models with a wireless network adapter on the back, you will have to shift the adapter to the front of the console for Kinect to have some space to work but apart from that, it's very straight forward.

Some of the technical aspects of Kinect are missing or isn't working as well as it should. You’ll still be able to control the console without the use of a controller. Wave at the camera and a menu will pop up, hover your hand over what you are looking for and select it. Kinect demands that you be active while playing, unlike the Nintendo Wii where you can sit on the sofa and simply wave the controller at the sensor to initiate the character to perform actions.
It is possible to also control Kinect with your voice, but just like any other Voice Recognition technology, it is a very tedious process. For example, to open the tray you have to say "Xbox...Kinect...Open tray." You must start every command with "Xbox" and "Kinect" to have it perform an action. It's better to just use your hands.

There is also an online video chat for you to talk to friends online. The great thing about this is that it is now in superb HD quality and you can walk around the room without having to adjust the camera to have it focus on you, the device will follow you wherever you go.

Playstation 3

The Playstation 3 was released on 23 March 2007. It is the successor of the Playstation 2 and is, obviously, the 3rd console designed and created by Sony. The new Blu-Ray technology is the PS3's stand out feature. Not only is it a games console, but it is still one of the best Blu-Ray DVD players on the market because of the firmware updates. More recently, the PS3 had an update to make the console compatible with 3D technology.

Move
The PlayStation Move is the answer to the Nintendo Wii. The difference in technology between the Wii and the Move are very clear. The Wii uses a sensor bar that send out infra-red lights for the Wii remote camera to pick up to send and receive signals. The Move uses similar technology but in reverse, the camera sits on top of your TV and that picks up the glowing ball on the controller. This allows the PS3 to measure the distance between you and the Move camera for pin-point accuracy.

The Move controller also has all the movement sensors of the Wii remote and MotionPlus attachment, showing that Sony weren't looking at inventing an entirely new idea but rather just taking what they already know and giving it a face lift.

It's very accurate and highly responsive. Some may complain that the price is a bit much and there are a lack of games to play for the time being but like all new technology, it needs time to get going before it can reach it's potential.

The Best

To be fair, each of the new motion sensor controllers both have great features available to them. The Kinect doesn't require having to hold a controller the whole time but you must stand at least 10 feet away from the camera for maximum fun. With the Move, the camera measures the distance between the PS3 and controller so it has no need for standing at a certain distance.

The Move controller can be a bit uncomfortable for some and can be a bit difficult for casual gamer's to get to grips with moving the controller and pressing buttons at the same time. Kinect only requires your hands and body as the controller, making it simple and effective. Both require calibrating to get the best experience from the devices, however the Move requires you to calibrate the controller for every game.

The games available on each console at the moment don't push the new technology to it's limit but expect to see a fierce competition in the new year between Kinect, Move and even the Wii. The year 2011 is the beginning of a new era in gaming, but who will be the victor?

We'll just have to wait and see...

  1. Fraser, this is very good. i like the way that you use the second person to engage the reader directly. You have also made a real effort to structure it properly. I would, however, delete the first 2 sentences. it is not necessary to provide a context for your review.

If you do this then I would happily award this with a pass.

    Good work.
